Overview
Roy (ロイ) is a rushdown swordfighter character with blistering speed, amazing combo game, and explosive killpower. His good air speed and fastfall allows him to move around his opponents quickly.

Inversely to most swordfighters, the tip of Roy's Binding Blade is the sourspot, and the hilt of his blade is the sweetspot. At close range, Roy is a monster, having potent KO power on attacks that rival heavyweights. Attacks like Forward Smash and Dancing Blade are fast and have potent killpower, killing at mid percents on the ledge. His fast mobility also lends to this, allowing him to close the gap quickly and abuse his fast moves up close.

In exchange for this power, Roy sacrifices range on his moves. Though the sweetspot outprioritises the sourspot on his sword, the effective range on his moves are short due to the inverse tipper. He must get up close to abuse the inverse tipper, as the sourspots are less reliable as combo starters and can't kill. Roy's disadvantage state is also poor, with his fast falling speed making him easy to juggle and combo. His recovery is also mediocore, with Blazer travelling a short vertical distance and being rather predictable.

With a fast-paced and aggressive playstyle, Roy's explosive damage output means he can easily steal stocks and turn the tides of battle. What more do you need from our boy?

Summary
Roy is a highly volatile, aggressive swordfighter that excels at threatening and pressuring opponents with fast, high-power, disjointed attacks, capable of pushing any advantage as far as it can go.
Pros Cons
  • Superb Mobility: Roy's movement speed is excellent, both on the ground and in the air, aiding in his close quarters gameplan.
  • Extreme Killpower: Many of Roy's moves boast excellent KO potential when inverse tipper'd, and are fast to come out. Roy just needs to win a few exchanges to take stocks.
  • Strong Shield Pressure: Roy possesses many aerials and DTilt which are safe against shield grabs.
  • Tech Chasing: All of the above makes him have one of, if not, the best tech chasing in the game. A skilled Roy can punish predictable tech options or missed techs really hard.
  • A Limited Disjoint but a Disjoint Nonetheless: Though Roy's sword is short and the tipper part lacks power he can still use it to outspace opponents, which helps a lot against characters that like to get in close range.
  • Unga Bunga: Unga Bunga (Placeholder)
  • Short Sword: The Inverse Tipper of Roy's Binding Blade means that Roy's effective range is very short despite having a sword. He is forced to get up close and personal if he wants to get any attacks in. Furthermore, connecting with the different parts of a move will create vastly different scenarios, which both Roy and his opponent need to adapt to.
  • Easy to Combo: Roy's fast falling speed combined with a lack of combo breakers in his toolkit make him very susceptible to being combo'd.
  • Predictable Recovery: Roy's low air acceleration combined with a linear and short recovery in Blazer makes Roy very easy to edgeguard. The short vertical distance covered by his Up B means that if Roy gets sent offstage at a semi-spike angle, he will almost certainly lose a stock.
Inverse Tipper
Similar to Marth, almost every attack from Roy that uses his sword has a "sweetspot" point and "sourspot" points on it. On the contrary to Marth, however, Roy's sweetspots are all located towards the hilt of his. Roy's sweetspots also require much less precision than Marth's, as his sweetspot effects take priority over sourspots if two varying hitboxes connect at the same time.

Sweetspot hits still have the same advantage of better knockback, damage, and subsequent frame advantage on connect as opposed to sourspot hits.

Roy's Jab is an amazing ledgetrapping move (not as good as Chrom's but still excellent). Its sweetspot can combo into FAir or BAir, the latter of which being his must-learn kill confirm, as it kills really well at the ledge.
