Pros

Cons

High Range: Ridley’s moves in general have massive range that allow him to keep the opponent at bay when approaching him. Half of his tail is a large disjoint that allows Ridley to keep brawlers out and contend with sword characters.

High Damage Potential: Ridley has some of the highest damage output in the game with his specials and Forward Air in particular being able to tack on a lot of percent quickly.

Large Consistent Kill Moves: Unlike other big body characters, Ridley’s Smash Attacks, Dash Attack, and Back Air lack any sourspots and deal full damage and knockback on hit making it easier for Ridley to kill off of stray hits.

Strong Ledge Game: Ridley’s large aerials, multiple jumps, and neutral special allow Ridley to easily challenge recovering opponents and pressure them at ledge. Ridley also has a lot of moves that 2frame forcing the opponent to recover low and then deal with Ridley’s high range when trying to get back on stage.

Predictable Recovery: While Ridley’s multiple jumps, large airdodge, side special, and up special allow Ridley to cover a lot of distance while recovering, side and up special’s long startup make Ridley’s recovery path predictable and easy to intercept. Up special’s lack of angles add to this issue and make recovering with Ridley a learned skill

Glass Cannon: Ridley has one of the largest hurtboxes in the game which makes him easier to combo and zone with projectiles. Ridley’s lack of a true superheavy’s weight makes Ridley more susceptible to getting hit and immediately KO’d by combos/strings

Poor Out of Shield: Ridley’s options out of shield are among the worst in the game with his fastest move (Nair) being frame 11. This forces Ridley to reposition after blocking moves making it easier for the opponent to keep pressuring him.

Requires Precision: Ridley’s moves have high startup and end lag with his normals only safe when spaced as far as possible. Ridley’s normals and aerials also tend to cover cardinal directions making Ridley more vulnerable from diagonal directions. His smash attacks, while strong, are also slow and cover a limited direction.

Lack of Shield Damage: The majority of Ridley’s moves don’t do as much shield damage versus what other heavies can do. This makes Ridley’s shield pressure a bit limited in only being able to mix up with normals and Side Special.
