Combo Theory

This page will be using the abbreviated versions of move names: Nair, Uair, Bair, Dair, Fair. For this page, if any move is mentioned, T- will refer to any hit with extra hitpause stun from her Ionized Tip, whether it be the tipper, Pummel Special, or Side Special sweetspot. If a finisher does not specify which hit, assume that the tipper is preferred, but all hits work.

Clairen is a punish game monster, as all of her hits have the potential to true combo into themselves, potentially even ignoring DI due to her Ionized Tip mechanic.

Grab

Clairen has a lot of custom combos, but her bread and butter starts when she gets the Grab. Here, we'll talk about all the percents she can lead into a grab.

She can Grab out of Bair, Fair, Dair Ionized Tip stun, but her Grab can also come from regrab follow ups from Bthrow or Fthrow, as well as whiff punishing an opponent with dashback.

What she does off it is very character dependent.

Up Throw

This move leads to nothing on Fleet or Wrastor, who are too light. You can sometimes catch Loxodont, but it becomes a 50/50 of Loxodont going for airdodge, since Clairen can catch both jump and no jump with Uair at 0%.

Kill Confirms

It always comes back to one thing: killing early as Clairen. If you don't kill at 80%, you'll kill at 180%.

A universal kill confirm that will always be important is Clairen's Forward Throw and Back Throw into Forward Strong, often tippered. If the opponent does DI out on one throw, it will equate to DI in on the other, and Clairen can Forward Strong either throw on DI in or no DI.

This becomes more lenient as percent climbs, but the execution can sometimes rely on dashing forward slightly. Evaluating the risk/reward of this option can be tricky, since while an option may kill earlier at ledge, opponents are more likely to DI and avoid in that direction. It's also important to remember that Forward Strong has the lowest kill power of all her Strongs and kills much later on farther side blastzones.

Fastfaller Confirms

Forward Throw into Jab into Forward Strong can be a more reliable tipper than the simple throw-strong combo.

Floatie Confirms

Back Throw into DACUS can be an effective option, boasting incredible killpower, especially on light characters.

Other Confirms+

  • The Larry: T-Uair > Ustrong. This is a true stun combo, but it requires hitfalling the Up Air to instantly land, into an immediate tipper Ustrong.
  • T-Bair > Dstrong. This is a true stun combo. This can either be done immediately or with a dash away Down Strong.
    • Note that for Clairen, almost every tipper aerial can link into first hit of Dstrong tipper. T-Bair is merely the most accessible one.
  • Fair > Fstrong.
  • Jab > Fstrong.
